What each postcode report gives you

The useful answer is rarely one number. Each district page combines the figures and context needed to understand what changed and what may be driving the total.

Annual comparison

Compare complete calendar years separately from the latest partial year, with no invented annual percentage.

Monthly trend

See the latest 12 published months and identify which months were busiest within the district.

Offence mix

Separate burglary, robbery, vehicle crime, violence, shoplifting and every other published group.

Underlying evidence

Open individual anonymised records and jump directly to the corresponding point on the crime map.

What “within a postcode” means here

A postcode-district report is built from privacy-protected map points and current postcode reference data. It is an area-exploration tool, not an address history.

Published location

An anonymised map point

The source moves coordinates to a nearby anonymous point to protect privacy.

Geographic match

The nearest current postcode

CrimeRate matches that point to the nearest entry in the ONS Postcode Directory.

District report

Grouped by outward code

The matched postcode contributes its outward code, such as UB8, M1 or SW1A.

Read the result as an area summary. Postcode districts are postal geographies, not official statistical areas. The figures must not be interpreted as an exact-address crime history or a prediction of personal safety.

Questions about crime by postcode

What the figures can tell you, what they cannot tell you, and what to check before comparing places.

Can I search a full postcode?

This page compares outward postcode districts such as UB8, M1 or SW1A. For a full postcode and selectable radius, use the crime map.

Does the district with the most records have the highest crime rate?

Not necessarily. These are counts, not population-adjusted rates. City centres, stations, retail areas and nightlife districts can have large visitor populations that are absent from residential population figures.

Why is current Greater Manchester data missing?

The archive is published by police force and month, not as one file per city. Greater Manchester Police has not supplied street-level files to the central archive since July 2019, so current Manchester totals would be incomplete. Birmingham records are supplied through West Midlands Police files. The police-force coverage page keeps these gaps visible.

Are locations and dates exact?

No. Locations are moved to nearby anonymous map points and the published incident date is a month, not a day or time.

Can I compare one year with another?

Yes, but compare complete January-to-December years. The report labels partial years and only calculates an annual change when both years are complete.
