Crime rankings by local authority
Compare the same published offence, geography and period across England and Wales. Switch between raw record counts and rates per 1,000 residents without pretending an informal city name is a statistical boundary.
Defined areas
Complete official LSOAs are grouped into their named local-authority area.
Comparable periods
Every row uses the same completed 12-month reporting window.
Two valid views
Counts show volume. Population rates adjust for resident population, not visitors or footfall.
Greater Manchester is excluded, not ranked at zero
GMP has not supplied this street-level dataset since July 2019. Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan are removed from every table rather than shown as unusually low-crime areas.
The ranking summary is being prepared
The page will publish only after local-authority boundaries, offence totals and population denominators have reconciled. It will not fall back to postcode totals or invent city boundaries.
What can and cannot be ranked
Published categories
Burglary, robbery, shoplifting, vehicle crime and the other listed groups can be compared using the same category definition.
Domestic violence
Domestic abuse is not a separate street-level category. It is partly contained within “Violence and sexual offences”, so this database cannot produce a domestic-violence leaderboard.
Murder
Murder is also not a standalone map category. Use the national Homicide Index evidence instead of relabelling broad violence records.
Open murder statistics →Only categories explicitly published in the street-level source appear in the selector.
How each ranking is built
Group complete LSOAs
Each crime record already carries an official LSOA code. Complete LSOAs are rolled into their named local-authority area.
Count one offence group
The selected published category is counted across the same 12-month window for every included area.
Attach one denominator
Rates use summed 2024 ONS small-area population estimates for the matching authority boundary.
Remove incomplete coverage
Greater Manchester is excluded before ranking. Missing data is never treated as zero crime.
The method keeps geographic boundaries, time periods and denominators consistent from the first row to the last.
Source periods and definitions remain attached to every result. Scotland is outside this territorial street-level source and is not included.
Need a postal view instead? Check a postcode district. To inspect the underlying approximate points, open the crime map. For force-level file coverage, use the police-force comparison.
